The Australian Government is assisting approximately 3.4 million children improve their dental health via a new Government funded dental scheme. This wonderful Government initiative offers dentistry help to children aged between 2 and 17 years.
Patients are given up to $1000 for each child to use on dental treatments over a two consecutive calendars.*
What does the Child Dental Benefits Schedule cover?
Dental services covered include:
- Dental examinations
- Teeth cleaning
- X-rays
- Fillings
- Fissure seals
- Extractions
- Root canal treatment
Dental services not covered include orthodontic dental work, cosmetic dental work and any services available in a hospital setting.
Who is eligible and how long does it last?
The Government Scheme commenced January 1st, 2014 and is available to all eligible families with children aged between 2 and 17 years. You would have received written notification from the Australian Government from early 2014. Please bring this to your appointment. We will verify eligibility before commencement of any treatment. Children must be entitled to Medicare and the family must be in receipt of Tax Benefit Part A or receive Government payments.
Families who qualify include those who receive the following:
- ABSTUDY
- Youth Allowance
- Parenting Payment
- Disability Support Pension
- Special Benefit
- Carer Payment
- Double Orphan Pension
- Veteran’s Children Education Scheme, if the child is 16 or over
- Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Act Education and Training Scheme, if the child is 16+
Your child is eligible for the scheme throughout the entire calendar year. Regardless of whether your child is turning 2 or 18 during the year, they will still be eligible for the full year. If your family stops receiving government benefits, your child is still entitled to the Child Benefit Scheme, as long as you received government funding for some part of the year.
Will all Dentists accept Child Dental Benefits Schedule patients?
At all My Dental Health locations, we accept patients under the Child Benefits Schedule. You can visit us at Martin Place Dental Health, Pyrmont Dental Health, and Sydney Dental Health. However, not all dentists can see patients under the scheme.
Dentists or Dental Specialists in either the public or private sectors, must hold general or specialist registration as a certified dentist with the Dental Board of Australia. In addition, they must hold a Medicare provider number to qualify and offer services to Child Dental Benefits Schedule patients.
At My Dental Health, we can check patient eligibility by contacting the Department of Human Services for you. We can also determine whether your child has any remaining benefits’ balance at each appointment.
Can I use my private health insurance in conjunction with the initiative?
Unfortunately, patients with private health insurance are unable to claim benefits from both their health fund and the Child Dental Benefits Schedule for the same treatment. However, you can still use private health insurance for other services not covered by the initiative.
Terms & Conditions associated
- Patients can use their full benefits within the first year if required. However, additional benefits will not be made available in the second year.
- If you do not use the $1000 benefit within the first year, it will roll over to your second year, for future use.
- If the $1000 is not used within the 2 year time period, any remaining benefits cannot be carried over to the following year.
* Please Note: The two year period commences at the start of the calendar year, not from the first appointment date.
